SEO & AEO
Your website gets found two ways now. People still type questions into Google and click a result — that's the world SEO was built for. Increasingly, they also ask an AI assistant and read a single synthesized answer — and your business is either in that answer or it isn't. Optimizing for the second world is called AEO. This page explains both, and what Business Dash can tell you about each.
SEO — Search Engine Optimization
SEO is the practice of making your pages rank in a search engine's list of results. Google reads your site, judges what each page is about and how trustworthy it is, and orders results accordingly. The visitor sees ten blue links and chooses one.
What matters for SEO is largely what it has always been:
- Content that answers what people search for — a page per service, per area, per question your customers actually ask.
- Titles and descriptions that say plainly what the page is.
- Speed and mobile behavior — slow or broken pages sink.
- Links and reputation — other sites pointing at yours.
The payoff is a click: someone lands on your site, where your pages do the selling.
AEO — Answer Engine Optimization
AEO (answer engine optimization) is the newer discipline: making your business show up inside AI-generated answers — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Google's AI summaries. The assistant doesn't show a list of links; it composes one answer and, at best, cites a handful of sources.
That changes the goal. An answer engine can only mention businesses whose pages its systems have actually read, and it favors pages it can lift a direct answer from:
- Direct-answer structure — a clear question, then the answer, near the top. Pages that bury the answer paragraph-deep get skipped.
- Facts stated plainly — prices, service areas, hours, and comparisons in text an engine can quote, not locked inside images.
- Being crawlable — the AI companies' crawlers must be able to fetch your pages at all.
The payoff is a mention: your business named, recommended, or cited in the answer itself — often without a click ever happening.
The difference in one line
SEO earns you a spot in a list of links; AEO earns you a spot in the answer. They're complementary — the same clear, factual, well-structured page tends to do well at both — but they're measured differently.
How Business Dash measures each
For SEO, your site analytics show the classic signals: pageviews, unique visitors, and which search engines and sites refer traffic to you.
For AEO, Business Dash records something most tools can't: the AI companies' crawlers reading your actual pages. Because your site is served from your own infrastructure, every visit from GPTBot (OpenAI), ClaudeBot (Anthropic), PerplexityBot, and the rest is logged first-party — per page, per crawler. That tells you concretely:
- Which pages the answer engines have read — and, just as important, which they've never fetched. A page no engine has read can't be cited.
- Who is paying attention — a training crawler means the next model generation may know the page; a search crawler means it can be cited today; a live-assistant visit means an AI was reading on a real person's behalf.
Outside-in tools sample what the models say about brands and guess at the rest. Your dashboard shows what their crawlers actually did.
If you build with the developer SDK: capturing the non-JavaScript crawlers takes a few lines of middleware on your site — see AI Visibility (AEO) in the Developer Docs.
